Welcome to another blog post for my English Composition 1 class. The focus of this blog post was to write a
different outcome to blog post number #5. So instead of being in a bad position with my grades and being in danger of not graduating, this blog post will be the opposite of that scenario. I will also write a little reflection at the bottom of the scenario. Below will be things that provided me insight on this blog assignment.
Counterfactual Scene I sit with my mother on a sunny day at the front desk of my high school waiting patiently to collect my cap and gown from my school counselor. I’m vibing and chilling, just listening to music while I watch the birds fly by the windows. “I’m so happy for you,” my mom says with a proud look on her face. I look at her and say in a nonchalant manner “ I’m just doing what I’m supposed to do”. Meanwhile I’m jumping for joy on the inside because I’ve been waiting for this day. Then a couple minutes after the counselor comes by to get us as we get to her office she asks me “How do you feel?, are you excited? “I’m ready to walk down and get my diploma” I responded. “Well let me give you guys the details” she says to us. Then she starts telling us about the location of the graduation and how many people I can bring to it . After that, we start talking about what college I decided to go to and when and where I’m going to talk about my senior project. Our senior project was to do 50 hours community service and talk about what we learned from it afterwards with my fellow seniors. “ I am a bit nervous about the senior project I don’t like speaking in front of everyone.” I say to my counselor. She laughs and says “ you’ll be fine, it’s the easiest part of the project.” After that we give our goodbyes and as we’re about to leave I tell my school counselor “Thank you for believing in me. I doubted myself at times when I was struggling and you guys made sure I stayed on my feet.” Then I turn around and tell my mom “I’m sorry for being such a big headache when it came to school but hey, it all worked out in the end. I know how bad you want to see me go out there and get that diploma and I'm’ just happy I was able to do it not only for you but also for myself.” Finally I thank the counselor again as the meeting concludes. Before we left the building I got to look at my cap and gown for the first time and that’s when it hit me and I said to myself “I can’t believe I’m actually going to graduate, It still doesn’t feel real to me yet.” Reflection It’s crazy thinking back to that time and thinking about how lazy I was for no reason. All I had to worry about at this point of my life was school. I didn’t have to worry too much because I only had one responsibility and I almost failed to keep that in a good position. I think about the whys a lot like why didn’t I just do what I had to do earlier and why can’t I overcome my laziness. I guess the positive from all this is that I still got to where I needed to be and that I learned from it. The scenario above just kinda gave me a glimpse of how pressure free that time could have been.

Hey, This is another blog for my English Composition 1. We were given the assignment to create an emotional
scene with dialogue and symbolism. We read Hills Like White Elephants and My Name is Margaret (Maya Angelou) and the themes that stood out to me were anger and disappointment. My scene will have those as well and it takes place at my high school during my senior year. My mother and I had a meeting with the school counselor to discuss my grades. I sit with my mother on a rainy day at the front desk of my high school waiting nervously to be called to the counselor’s office. My hands are shaking a bit as I watch the clock slowly tick. “You nervous” my mom asks with a serious look on her face. I look at her with a fake smile and say “ nope, there's no reason to be”. Meanwhile I’m dying inside because I know what's coming. Then a couple minutes after the counselor comes by to get us and once we get to her office she says “We got a problem and not a lot of time to fix it” I already knew what the problem was and felt like an idiot for letting my laziness get the better of me. “Its my grades right?” I responded. “Yes you are in danger of failing 2 classes that are needed in order to graduate.” she says to us. Then she shows us the grades of those classes and what I need to do to get them up to where they need to be. My mother is just sitting next to me with the most serious expression I’ve ever seen in my life as she starts to converse with my counselor. At this point I’ve hit rock bottom and just block out their conversation and start to argue with myself in my head. Repeating “why do I always do this to myself?” My mother calls me and says “what are you going to do about this? You need to graduate and go to college.” The school counselor then drops another bombshell before I could even answer my mother question when she asks “Did you get started on the senior project because that’s due next month.” She then proceeds to explain the senior project to my mother. Next she tells me “ we all want to see you graduate and receive that diploma but you gotta put in the work to make it a reality. So go talk to your teachers and make a plan to get you caught they are willing to help you” “Thank you for giving me a reality check. I won’t disappoint you guys and I get started right away” I say to her. Then I turn around and tell my mom “I’m sorry for not doing something I am capable of and I’ll make you proud because I know how bad you want to see me go out there and get that diploma.” I apologize again as the meeting concludes. Now that the meeting is over I go to speak to my teachers of those three classes and apologize to them for being lazy and we come up with a hectic plan that will get me where I need to be but also demands a lot of hard work and commitment. I thank them all and my mother and leave the building. As we’re leaving the building I tell my mother “I feel motivated and ready to fight for my future.” She responds “You better!” Hello this is another blog post for my English Composition class. I decided to have a little fun with it and set our interaction through text. I also had to read and annotate three quotes from each reading, the links will be below. Teach Writing as a Process Not a Product (Don Murray) -- introduction is not required reading Against Vanity: In Praise of Revision (Mary Karr) Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life | pp. 28 -34 | Short Assignments & Shitty First Drafts (Anne Lamott) On my winter break I was starting my written assignment that was due after winter break I didn’t know what to write or even how to start. I told myself often “ writing may suck but once you get going, you write something awesome.” Of course I didn’t know how to apply my own words. I still can’t start my first draft. Then later that night suddenly I heard a loud bang in the living room as I went to my living room I saw my Iphone on the ground. As I picked it up I saw the message app open and there was a group chat with my name in it as well as these three Don Murray, Mary Karr, and Anne Lamott. I was creeped out by this and didn’t understand who these people were but they somehow knew about me and what I was going through during my writing process for this essay I was doing. These were the texts that were exchanged between myself and them. E.A : Who are you people? Why are we in a group chat?!?!? D.M, M.K, A.L : We’re writers that are here to help you and have a discussion about the writing process. E.A : Well I’m gonna need all the help I can get to be honest. E.A : So how do I start my writing process? D.M : First by shutting up. When you are talking he isn’t writing. And you don’t learn a process by talking about it, but by doing it E.A : Well that’s a little rude don’t you think? E.A : But ... E.A : I get it you want me to stop talking about nonsense and collaborate with my author self in order to figure this out and get it done. E.A : But I just want it to be good without any mistakes. E.A : Maybe that’s why I can’t put pen to paper right now. D.M : The writing process itself can be divided into three stages: prewriting, writing, and rewriting. D.M : The amount of time a writer spends in each stage depends on his personality, his work habits, his maturity as a craftsman, and the challenge of what he is trying to say. E.A : I guess that makes sense but still I’m kinda offended by your words but it can’t be helped lol. E.A : You're right though I think too much instead of allowing mistakes in my writing process. E.A : But I still can’t get outta my own way, when I write there are too many distractions in my mind, it eats my time and focus. A.L : The other voices are banshees and drunken monkeys. They are the voices of anxiety, judgment, doom, guilt. Also, severe hypochondria. E.A : You may be right about the anxiety one for sure it sometimes can eat at my mind and make me unsure how to write or what to write. M.K : In the beginning, when there are zero pages, you have to cheer yourself into cranking stuff out, even if it later lands on the cutting room floor. A.L : All good writers write them. This is how they end up with good second drafts and terrific third drafts. A.L : The first draft is the child’s draft, where you let it all pour out and then let it romp all over the place, knowing that no one is going to see it and that you can shape it later. M.K : The idea is to get some scenes down. Let your mind roam down some alleys that may land in dead ends—that’s the nature of the process. E.A : Yeah, you’re right. I shouldn't focus on the destination but the journey in my writing process. E.A : In first drafts you're words should be free and should flow through your paper without any worries. E.A : I guess I failed to see and rushed for perfection on the first try. E.A : Thanks guys this discussion has helped me develop a starting point and a guide into my writing process. E.A : Next time don’t drop my Iphone on the floor. I don’t need the headache of fixing it. This is an assignment for my English Composition class. The assignment was to write a letter
to our author self. I read A Fable For Living, a story between two people and their relationship. This letter is meant to forge a relationship with our author self and carry it into the future. Dear Unknown, I know we are the same person but we are complete strangers to each other. We never connected and I distanced myself from you for years. You were someone who I thought to be useless and someone I thought I had disposed of. To put it bluntly it's as if you were a toy I got for my birthday that I never liked, So I put you in the basement never to be seen again. I truly do apologize for that. You were most likely the only one that understood what I thought and felt my struggles in life but all I did was discard you. I truly felt that you weren’t needed in life in order to succeed but, I admit I was wrong. If only I was to connect to you sooner maybe life would have been easier to manage. Maybe the pain I felt would've been easier to manage if I established that bond sooner. It doesn’t matter anymore though, that all changes this semester we must establish our bond. I have a three step plan to keep in touch on a consistent basis. First would be to find a way to connect with you. Maybe seeing what type of writing we like and are comfortable with before expanding to other things. The next step is to take my english compassion class seriously and have fun with it. I want to strengthen our bond and If I take my english composition class seriously I know it will constantly keep us in contact and strengthen our relationship. Finally I will be more open and try to write down about important things going on in the world and my life. I feel as this is important to not only establish our bond but also it will teach me on how to continue it past this semester. Alot of things go on in my life and I feel this will help me vent and understand what I'm feeling. That’s my three step plan that I believe will work in keeping us in contact on a consistent basis for not only the rest of the semester but also for the rest of my life. How to Create a Weebly Website (Video Tutorial) All Writing is Multimodal (Cheryl Ball and Colin Charlton) It's All C.R.A.P: Four Principles of Design (Think Around Corners) Assessing Multimodal Student Work (Kent State University) 1. Why are we creating a website for our english composition 1 course? I believe we are creating this website to connect and bring our author selves into life. Creating this website allows for to be creative with our writing and grow ourselves into people who can put meaning into their words. Also to connect with our fellow classmates and share different ideas and beliefs. This also allows us to do this in a more creative interactive way, it makes it fun and unique to me. 2. How do Ball and Charlton define "multimodal" writing? Ball and Charlton define “multimodal” writing as the word mode + multiple put together to make meaning-making or communicating in different ways. They believe any communication that a person makes is multimodal. 3. Do you agree with Ball and Charlton when they claim "all writing is multimodal"? Yes I do agree with the claim that Ball and Charlton make. I believe all writing is meant to make meaning of something. Whether it may be to express yourself, inform an audience of people, or change the minds of others. People who write end up using at least two of these modes on their own, in my opinion. 4. As a website author who will create your own web page content in this course, how would you rank the importance of the five modes on a scale of 1-5? Please provide a brief rationale to support each mode ranking. First Gestural I would give a 2 because the type of content isn’t in person. I would only use this mode for a vlog or something along those lines, so to me gestural wouldn’t be that convenient when it comes to my blog assignments because It not my type. The next mode Spatial I give a 4, it’s important because you want your text to be structured and organized. You don’t want to lose your audience. Then Aural I give a 5 because it’s good to pair with other modes and it helps bring your writing to life. Second to last would be Linguistic which I give a 5. It’s very important to express details and ideas in your text and to use words that will support those ideas and details. The Last one Visual is also a 5, because it’s very important to the text. It lets your writing branch out into different types of text. It also expresses and illustrates things about your writings. 5. What does the C.R.A.P. acronym stand for? The C.R.A.P acronym stand for contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity. They are the four principles of design. 6. As a website author who will create your own web page content in this course, how would you rank the importance of the four C.R.A.P. principles of design on a scale of 1-5? Please provide a brief rationale to support each design principle ranking. First up is contrast which I give a 4. Making things stand out in your text is important, especially when it comes to the main details. Also making your writing look creative makes it more noticeable to readers. Next is repetition which I give a 5. You don’t want people to get lost while viewing your website. If everything's the same when it comes to navigating then those viewing your website would find it easy to get from point A to point B. Our work isn’t just our blog assignments, it’s also the look and management of our website. Now I give alignment a 4 because making things easier to read on our websites and our assignments is important, you don’t want to be all over the place. Now last is proximity and I’ll give it a 4. It’s important to put things that are similar to each other together and categorize those things. 7. What are the seven sample criteria Borton and Huot suggest writers use to assess a multimodal composition? The seven sample criteria that Borton and Huot suggest to assess a multimodal composition are these purpose, audience, tone, organized, transitions, synthesizes, and detailed. 8. Do the Borton-and-Huot criteria seem similar or different from the criteria we would use to assess a traditional print essay? Why or why not? It does seem similar to me because all the things in the criteria seem like things that would be needed in order to be successful in traditional print essay. The criteria seems textbook in a essay. Hola. This is my first blog of the semester for my English Composition 1 class. I will be filling out The Proust Questionnaire. It was written by a dude named Marcel Proust, who is a french guy from Paris that wrote during World War 1. He also has a really sweet mustache.
1. What is your idea of perfect happiness? My idea of perfect happiness is when those you care about are doing well in life and your life is in order. For me seeing family and myself in a good place brings a lot of happiness and it’s one of the things I strive for in life. 2. What is your greatest fear? My greatest fear is heights. Mentally I’m not afraid of heights but my body is for some reason, It causes my legs to lose a bit of feeling by itself. 3. What is the trait you most deplore in yourself? I definitely deplore my laziness trait. It gets incredibly frustrating to deal with when I want to get things done. Sometimes I need to rush to do things because my laziness kept putting it to the side. 4. What is the trait you most deplore in others? Selfishness would be the trait I most deplore in others. People don’t think about how their actions affect others. I think we live in a world that is going through a difficult time and selfish people aren’t making it a better place. 5. Which living person do you most admire? My father for sure, He’s taught me everything I know in life. He’s always been able to stay strong during difficult times in our lives. He also takes care of my family and I like to think that I’m a good person because of him. 6. What is your greatest extravagance? Oh that's easy, it’s video games without a doubt. It’s my favorite hobby and I don’t have a problem spending money on things I enjoy. It’s fun to get new video games and play them with your friends. Although if someone did the math to see how much money I spent on video games the number would probably make me regret it. 7. What is your current state of mind? Well my current state of mind is not good right now, I just saw my 76ers lose to the Raptors. So I would describe my current state as depressed because of the tourture I just put myself through watching this team. 8. What do you consider the most overrated virtue? I feel like loyalty may be the most overrated virtue to me. People these days are super loyal and sometimes they seem like fools because of it. A lot of times people are loyal to the wrong ones and end up being dragged into others messes. It worse when the person or people you are loyal to don’t give you that same energy. I’m not saying loyalty is a bad thing just saying people need to evaluate the one they are loyal to. 9. On what occasion do you lie? I don’t lie often, it makes me feel really bad when I do. I only lie on things that involve me and when I know it doesn’t really affect anyone else. 10. What do you most dislike about your appearance? I think I’m good the way look. I don’t really think about those things too much it’s not that important to me. 11. Which living person do you most despise? It’s without question Jake Paul. He’s an idiot that made terrible music and does the most annoying things you can think of. Also has all the qualities of a garbage human being. I could go on about his stupidity but that would bring out words that aren’t family friendly. 12. What is the quality you most like in a man? Honesty for sure, me and my friends are very honest with each other no matter what even if it's things that we don’t want to necessarily want to hear. 13. What is the quality you most like in a woman? I guess intelligence would be the one. I believe a woman who’s smart is focused and is very determined in the things they want out of life. 14. Which words or phrases do you most overuse? It has to be “I forgot". It gets me in trouble with my parents because I overuse it when I don't do the things I'm supposed to do, but at least I'm being honest when I say it ... sometimes. 15. What or who is the greatest love of your life? My mother no doubt, she’s my rock and the one I turn to when I’m stuck in this crazy roller coaster called life. I don’t know where I’d be if she wasn’t there to teach me right from wrong and shield from the wrong people durig my younger years. 16. When and where were you happiest? This past summer at a camping resort. My whole family was there and it was a beautiful experience seeing and feeling the fun we all have with each other. I hope to do it again this summer maybe at a different place. 17. Which talent would you most like to have? I would like to be a good basketball player just because the money you get in the NBA is ridiculous. The league is handing out a minimum of 1 millions dollars per year just to ride the bench, I could definitely do that. 18. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? Maybe if I could be a little taller I would be a little happier. I mean I’m fine with my height, but hey if I went to sleep at 5’9 and woke up 6’0 I ain’t gonna complain. 19. What do you consider your greatest achievement? I would say graduating high school is my greatest achievement. My parents never graduated high school so to do that meant a lot to me especially with them being there. Seeing their tears of joy is something I’m proud of and it motivates me to do better in life. 20. If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be? I would come back as a husky with a good owner. I don’t mind looking cool and not having a care in the world. No bills, no priorities, a nice bed, and I get to chase the mailman that doesn't sound too bad. 21. Where would you most like to live? Japan, it would offer a different experience than living in the states. See a different culture, language, and people would be fun. Once I get past the language barrier I’ll be fine. Plus you can play Mario Kart in Tokyo! 22. What is your most treasured possession? I don’t really have a most treasured possession. Most things I have is replaceable to me, but if I had to choose I would say my phone just because I use it everyday to keep up with my friends and family. 23. What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery? To me the lowest depth of misery is when you feel like your life holds no value in this world. 24. What is your favorite occupation? Maybe an astronaut, it’s not something I grew up loving but I just think there is a lot of mysteries surrounding space and I've always thought that working on spaceships and dealing with gravity was pretty cool. 25. What is your most marked characteristic? My sarcasm has to be it. My family has trouble sometimes figuring out whether I’m being sarcastic or not. Which can be a pain at times, but I find it hilarious when they just look at me confused. 26. What do you most value in your friends? LIke I said before, I value my friends honesty. It goes a long way and really shows how much I can trust a friend of mine. We feel more like family because we don’t sugarcoat anything and are always looking out for each other. 27. Who are your favorite writers? I can’t answer this one because I don’t really like to read, but I hope I’ll have an answer to this question by the end of the semester. 28. Who is your hero of fiction? Batman, due to him being able to survive and thrive in an environment where most heros and villians have superpowers. 29. Which historical figure do you most identify with? Roberto Clemente is the one I identify with the most. Not only due to him being Puerto Rican like myself, but I feel that if I was put into his position I would also use my money and fame to help others especially mi isla. |
